These are local overrides and the whitelist. Both live in the General tab, not in the \u201cBlocked IPs\u201d tab. This chapter explains how to use them without locking yourself out of your own site.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cisilino.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/manuale-csdn-blocco-sblocco-whitelist.webp\" alt=\"Diagram of WordPress with the General tab of the plugin CSDN: block IP WordPress with overrides and whitelist\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\"\/><\/figure>\n<h2>Where it is<\/h2>\n<p>In the WordPress side menu open <strong>Settings &gt; Cisilino Site Defense Network<\/strong> (point 1 in the image). Then choose the <strong>General<\/strong> tab (point 2). Further down you&#8217;ll find three sections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>point 3: \u201cRecent activity log\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>point 4: \u201cLocal IP overrides\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>point 5: \u201cTrusted IPs (whitelist)\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After every action you&#8217;re always taken back to the General tab, even if you started from the \u201cBlocked IPs\u201d tab. The confirmation message appears there.<\/p>\n<h2>What it&#8217;s for<\/h2>\n<p>Overrides let you force the blocking or unblocking of a single address. This works regardless of the failed-attempts threshold and the list received from the panel. They apply only to this site: they are never sent to the panel.<\/p>\n<p>The whitelist serves a different purpose. It lists the addresses that must never be counted as failed login attempts, for example your office network.<\/p>\n<h2>How to use it<\/h2>\n<h3>Reading the log (point 3)<\/h3>\n<p>The \u201cRecent activity log\u201d section shows the \u201cLast 50 failed login attempts detected on this site.\u201d The columns are IP, Username tried, Attempts, Status and Last seen. The status is \u201cBlocked\u201d or \u201cWatched\u201d. There is one row for each IP, with a cumulative counter. The username shown is the last one that was tried. If there&#8217;s nothing you&#8217;ll read \u201cNo events recorded.\u201d Don&#8217;t confuse this list with the \u201cActivity log\u201d tab: that&#8217;s a separate topic.<\/p>\n<h3>Blocking or unblocking an IP (point 4)<\/h3>\n<p>This is the part you need in order to block IP WordPress by hand.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In the \u201cIP address\u201d field write a single address, for example <code>203.0.113.5<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li>Under \u201cAction\u201d choose \u201cBlock (ban)\u201d or \u201cAlways unblock (unban)\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Under \u201cDuration\u201d choose \u201cPermanent (until you remove it)\u201d, \u201c1 hour\u201d, \u201c6 hours\u201d, \u201c24 hours\u201d or \u201c7 days\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Press \u201cSave override\u201d. If the IP is valid you&#8217;ll read \u201cOverride saved and .htaccess updated.\u201d The message appears even if .htaccess isn&#8217;t writable: it doesn&#8217;t prove the block is active.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Below the form is the table of active overrides, with the columns IP, Action, Expiry and Created on. Each row has a \u201cRemove\u201d button. Removing an override shows a confirmation that .htaccess was updated. If the table is empty you&#8217;ll find \u201cNo active overrides.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Using the whitelist (point 5)<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>In the box write one address or network per line, for example <code>203.0.113.5<\/code> or <code>203.0.113.0\/24<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li>Press \u201cSave whitelist\u201d. You&#8217;ll read \u201cWhitelist saved.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If your IP isn&#8217;t in the list, a warning tells you so. The \u201cAdd to whitelist\u201d button inserts only that entry and leaves the others untouched.<\/p>\n<h2>Default values and limits<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The default action is \u201cBlock (ban)\u201d, and the default duration is \u201cPermanent (until you remove it)\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>The \u201cIP address\u201d field accepts only a single IPv4 or IPv6 address. A CIDR such as <code>203.0.113.0\/24<\/code> is rejected with \u201cInvalid IP.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Each IP can have only one override. If you save a second one for the same address, it replaces the first.<\/li>\n<li>The whitelist accepts single IPs and IPv4 CIDR networks with a prefix from 0 to 32. Watch out: <code>0.0.0.0\/0<\/code> is accepted and covers every IPv4 address, so it switches off failed-login counting for everyone. For IPv6 only the exact address is valid.<\/li>\n<li>Invalid rows in the whitelist are discarded, and the message tells you how many, for example \u201c1 row discarded because it is invalid.\u201d Duplicates are removed.<\/li>\n<li>Saving the whitelist replaces the entire previous list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> the \u201cIP address\u201d field is already filled in with your own IP, and below it you&#8217;ll read \u201cYour current IP is \u2026\u201d. The default action is \u201cBlock (ban)\u201d. If you press \u201cSave override\u201d without looking, you block yourself, immediately, and you&#8217;ll see a 403 error on the whole site. Always check the action and the address before saving.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> the \u201cUnblock\u201d button on the \u201cBlocked IPs\u201d tab asks for no confirmation. It immediately creates a permanent override. The whitelist doesn&#8217;t remove existing blocks: an IP that&#8217;s already blocked stays blocked even if you add it to the list, until you unblock it. It doesn&#8217;t stop the panel&#8217;s blocks, the security list or the manual bans either: it only stops failed logins from being counted. Blocking also only works with Apache or LiteSpeed, and with a writable <code>.htaccess<\/code> file. With other servers the ban exists in the tables, but the server doesn&#8217;t apply it.<\/p>\n<h2>What happens behind the scenes<\/h2>\n<p>When you decide to block IP WordPress with an override, the plugin rewrites a block of <code>.htaccess<\/code> between <code># BEGIN Cisilino Site Defense Network<\/code> and <code># END Cisilino Site Defense Network<\/code>. The rest of the file is left untouched. The blocked IPs are the union of four sources: the local block for failed logins, the panel&#8217;s list, the optional list from the \u201cSecurity level\u201d, and manual bans. The unban removes from that union the entry matching the address you wrote. A panel network (for example <code>198.51.100.0\/24<\/code>) only leaves if you unblock <code>198.51.100.0<\/code>, not a single IP inside that network. The unblock also applies to the optional \u201cSecurity level\u201d list (Noob, Casual, Berserk). Those IPs don&#8217;t appear in the \u201cBlocked IPs\u201d tab, but an unban neutralises them anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The plugin reads the visitor&#8217;s IP from <code>REMOTE_ADDR<\/code> and ignores <code>X-Forwarded-For<\/code>. Behind a proxy or a CDN the address seen can be the proxy&#8217;s. In that case a block risks hitting every visitor.<\/p>\n<p>Expirations work like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A timed manual ban is removed when it expires, and the address leaves <code>.htaccess<\/code> at the next check cycle, within around 15 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>A local ban, the kind triggered by too many failed logins, doesn&#8217;t expire on its own. It is removed only with an unban.<\/li>\n<li>A timed unban, once it expires, brings the block back if the original source is still there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Every time you save or remove an override, and every change to the whitelist, is written to the activity log.<\/p>\n<h2>Practical examples<\/h2>\n<h3>Block IP WordPress for a day<\/h3>\n<p>You want to stop the address <code>203.0.113.5<\/code> for 24 hours. Write it in \u201cIP address\u201d, leave \u201cBlock (ban)\u201d, choose \u201c24 hours\u201d and press \u201cSave override\u201d. In the \u201cBlocked IPs\u201d tab it will show up with the source \u201cmanual\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3>Whitelist for the office network<\/h3>\n<p>Write <code>203.0.113.0\/24<\/code> into the whitelist and press \u201cSave whitelist\u201d. From that moment the wrong logins from that network are no longer counted. Do this before testing with wrong passwords.<\/p>\n<h3>I&#8217;ve blocked myself<\/h3>\n<p>If you can still open the admin area, for example from your phone on mobile data, go to \u201cBlocked IPs\u201d and press \u201cUnblock\u201d on your IP. Then add it to the whitelist. If instead you see a 403 across the whole site, you can connect via FTP and remove the line with your IP from the <code>.htaccess<\/code> file. Be careful: the plugin can rewrite it on the next event, so as soon as you&#8217;re back in, use \u201cUnblock\u201d and the whitelist.<\/p>\n<p>To understand more about how Apache handles these access controls, read the <a href=\"https:\/\/httpd.apache.org\/docs\/2.4\/howto\/access.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apache access control guide<\/a>: it explains the directives the plugin writes for you.<\/p>\n<p>In short, to block IP WordPress carefully means checking the action and the address before saving.
