It records logins, users, content, plugins, themes and more. Open the <strong>Activity log<\/strong> tab (point 2). From top to bottom you&#8217;ll find these sections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>point 3: \u201cActivity log settings\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>point 4: the status row above the form, with the row counters.<\/li>\n<li>point 5: \u201cPanel delivery diagnostics\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>point 6: \u201cLogged activity\u201d, the table with the filters.<\/li>\n<li>point 7: \u201cClear the local log\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What the activity log WordPress keeps is for<\/h2>\n<p>It helps you answer questions like \u201cwho deactivated that plugin?\u201d or \u201cwhich IP did that user log in from?\u201d. Every event is a row in the site&#8217;s database table.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t confuse it with the per-IP failed-login counter, which decides the blocks. They are two separate pieces of data, with different retention rules. A failed login attempt, though, also shows up here, one row per attempt.<\/p>\n<p>For a long history and for serious searches, the panel is better. The local log also works without the panel. The connection is set up in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisilino.com\/en\/?p=974\">Remote settings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>How to use it<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the tab and look at the row \u201cRows in the local log: N \u2014 awaiting delivery to the panel: M\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>In the form, choose the settings described below.<\/li>\n<li>Press <strong>Save log settings<\/strong>. You&#8217;ll see \u201cActivity log settings saved.\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>To read the events go to \u201cLogged activity\u201d. Choose a group from the <strong>All groups<\/strong> menu, or type into the <strong>User, object or IP<\/strong> field, then press <strong>Filter<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>The form settings<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cLog activity on this site\u201d: turn it off and no new rows are written. Old ones stay.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cLocal retention (days)\u201d: from 0 to 3650. With 0, nothing is deleted for age.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cRows kept cap\u201d: from 0 to 1,000,000. With 0 there&#8217;s no cap.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSend activity to the panel\u201d: requires the connection set up in Remote settings.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cImmediate delivery\u201d: sending starts at the end of the request, without making the visitor wait. Turn it off, and sending happens only with the 15-minute synchronisation.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat to log\u201d: one box for each of the 18 event groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The event groups<\/h3>\n<p>The groups carry these labels, identical in the \u201cWhat to log\u201d boxes and in the <strong>All groups<\/strong> menu: Logins (login, logout, failed attempts); Users (creation, profile edits, roles, deletion); Content (posts, pages, custom post types); Categories and tags; Comments; Media (attachments); Plugins (activation, deactivation, installation, update); Themes (theme switch, update, customisation); WordPress updates; WordPress settings; Navigation menus; Widgets; Theme\/plugin file editor from wp-admin; Content export; File uploads (including those outside the media library); Plugin file integrity; Plugin settings (including this plugin&#8217;s own); Plugin lifecycle (deactivation, uninstallation, log clearing).<\/p>\n<p>For WordPress settings only a selection of the main options is logged, for example <code>blogname<\/code>, <code>siteurl<\/code>, <code>admin_email<\/code>, <code>default_role<\/code> and <code>active_plugins<\/code>. For other plugins, only settings declared with <code>register_setting()<\/code> or saved through <code>options.php<\/code> are visible. The file editor logs the attempt, not the outcome.<\/p>\n<h3>How to read the table<\/h3>\n<p>The columns are When, User, IP, Group, Action, Detail and Sent. There are 50 rows per page, most recent first. Use <strong>Previous<\/strong> and <strong>Next<\/strong> to move around. If there&#8217;s nothing, you&#8217;ll read \u201cNo activity recorded (with these filters).\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Group and Action appear with their raw name, for example <code>plugins<\/code> and <code>deactivated<\/code>. Anyone not logged in shows as \u201c(not authenticated)\u201d. In the Sent column you&#8217;ll find the panel&#8217;s confirmation date, or \u201c\u2014\u201d if the row is still queued. The technical details field isn&#8217;t visible here: it&#8217;s read on the panel.<\/p>\n<p>An example row: 12\/10\/2026 09:14:02, user mario (administrator), IP <code>203.0.113.5<\/code>, group <code>plugins<\/code>, action <code>deactivated<\/code>.<\/p>\n<h3>Examples of reading it<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u201cLogins (login, logout, failed attempts)\u201d group and a suspicious IP: a run of <code>failed<\/code> followed by a <code>success<\/code> can mean someone has guessed the password.<\/li>\n<li>A <code>users<\/code> row with action <code>role_changed<\/code> and an unexpected user: check whether it&#8217;s a privilege escalation.<\/li>\n<li>A row in the Uploads group with a block warning: someone tried to upload a dangerous file.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Default values for the activity log WordPress keeps<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Logging on, sending to the panel on, immediate delivery on, every group active.<\/li>\n<li>Retention: 30 days. The age-based deletion runs once a day.<\/li>\n<li>Row cap: 500. The check runs every 100 inserts, so the table can exceed it by about 100 rows.<\/li>\n<li>If you save with no group ticked, the log stays on but writes nothing.<\/li>\n<li>It doesn&#8217;t log normal visits, and it doesn&#8217;t export data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> a failed login saves the username typed. If someone types their password into the username field, that text stays in the log, which can go to the panel. The plugin doesn&#8217;t filter it out. Keep this in mind when you share or read the log.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> the row cap (default 500) deletes the oldest rows even if they haven&#8217;t been sent to the panel yet. The cap takes priority over the delivery guarantee. On sites with a lot of unauthenticated traffic (failed logins, comments, file submissions), 500 rows can run out quickly. If you need the full history, raise the cap, but bear in mind that setting it to 0 removes the limit on disk space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> \u201cClear activity log\u201d is irreversible locally. It first asks for confirmation: \u201cClear the whole local activity log? This cannot be undone.\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>What isn&#8217;t saved<\/h2>\n<p>Plain-text passwords are never logged. When a profile is edited, only the fact that the password changed is saved. The plugin&#8217;s \u201cAPI Key\u201d field is shown as <code>***<\/code>. Options from other plugins whose name contains words like key, secret, token, password, auth, salt, nonce, license or credential have their value replaced with \u201c*** (value not logged)\u201d. Option values are truncated to 200 characters.<\/p>\n<h2>Panel delivery diagnostics<\/h2>\n<p>The section at point 5 is useful when activity isn&#8217;t reaching the panel. A failed send shows no visible error: the rows stay queued and retry. The only symptom is the \u201cawaiting\u201d counter that doesn&#8217;t drop.<\/p>\n<p>The table shows, among other things, \u201cPanel connection\u201d, \u201cActivity log\u201d, \u201cSending to the panel\u201d, \u201cImmediate delivery\u201d, \u201cRows queued\u201d, \u201cerror_log() destination\u201d and \u201cLast send attempt\u201d. Problem values are in red. If the last attempt shows fewer rows accepted than sent, you&#8217;ll see \u201cRows rejected by the panel\u201d: those rows aren&#8217;t retried.<\/p>\n<p>There are three buttons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Try sending now<\/strong>: makes a test send immediately. The result appears in the table.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enable detailed logging<\/strong> (then <strong>Disable detailed logging<\/strong>): also logs successful sends.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clear diagnostic log<\/strong>: clears only the \u201cLast attempts\u201d list, which holds at most 25 entries. It only appears if there are entries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What happens behind the scenes<\/h2>\n<p>At the end of the request the plugin closes the response to the visitor, where the server allows it, and sends the rows to the panel in batches of at most 200, oldest first. A row counts as delivered only once the panel confirms receiving it. A synchronisation every 15 minutes acts as a safety net.<\/p>\n<p>Age-based retention deletes old rows once a day. If sending is on and the panel is configured, it only deletes rows already confirmed. Otherwise it deletes purely by age.<\/p>\n<p>Clearing the log first tries to send the backlog, then deletes everything. It logs the clearing event, which becomes the first row of the new log. It sends no delete command to the panel: the history already sent stays there. After clearing you&#8217;ll read \u201cLocal activity log cleared. History already sent to the panel was not touched.\u201d. If there were rows never delivered, a bold warning tells you how many were lost.<\/p>\n<h2>If the activity log WordPress keeps won&#8217;t send<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u201cawaiting\u201d counter doesn&#8217;t drop: open the diagnostics, check the last attempt and the HTTP code, then press \u201cTry sending now\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>A yellow box on the panel that doesn&#8217;t confirm: the panel may be out of date. The rows stay queued and nothing is lost.<\/li>\n<li>Connection \u201cNOT configured\u201d: without a customer code, API key and URL nothing is sent.
